There’s a revolution in Hollywood, and actors are leading the charge. From YouTube to the Emmys and all our TV screens, Issa Rae is a living testament to the power of self-made storytelling. Through her studio, Hoorae Media, Rae offers fresh perspectives on identity, community, and creativity that feel modern and relatable, with just the right amount of nuance. Her hit series, such as Insecure, Rap Sh!t, and A Black Lady Sketch Show, have gone down as cultural moments that have shaped twenty-first-century Hollywood while providing opportunities for many underrepresented writers, directors, and performers.
2. Hello Sunshine – Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine is a blueprint for actors looking to take charge of their creative processes. The three-year-old company has successfully expanded into film, television, books, and even podcasts, with hits such as Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere, and The Morning Show. However, this success did not come easily. With dry and stereotypical roles constantly coming her way, Witherspoon knew she had the capacity and creativity to tell better stories, leading her to launch Pacific Standard—later relaunched as Hello Sunshine. Today, Witherspoon’s studio spotlights real experiences of women, and she routinely partners with underrepresented authors and creators from different backgrounds.

3. JuVee Productions – Viola Davis and Julius Tennon
Once you’ve achieved legend status, what’s left but to build a legacy? This is what Viola Davis and Julius Tennon are doing with their studio, JuVee Productions. With JuVee Productions, Davis and Tennon are spotlighting a wide range of stories, particularly those centered on women and people of color. With their critically acclaimed film, The Woman King, which celebrates the forgotten African women warriors, they have demonstrated their commitment to telling bold, complex, and culturally rich stories.
4. Genius Productions – Marsai Martin
At fourteen, Marsai Martin became the youngest ever executive producer of a major Hollywood film with Little (2019). Now, she owns Genius Productions LLC, and through it, she is creating a platform to tell stories beyond the regular Hollywood lens. Martin’s ability to disrupt and dominate the industry at such an early age shows that the dynamics are shifting and new voices are on the come-up.

5. Green Door Pictures – Idris Elba
Idris Elba founded Green Door Pictures in 2013 to promote inclusion and diversity on- and off-screen. With works like In the Long Run, a sitcom loosely based on Elba’s childhood, Elba is bringing Black British culture to the forefront and exploring tough themes such as identity, migration, family, and community.
6. Viva Maude – Tessa Thompson
With a keen eye for projects that go beyond the conventional, Tessa Thompson’s Viva Maude focuses on bringing bold stories to viewers while discovering new voices. Having signed new deals with HBO and HBO Max, Viva Maude is now developing interesting stories such as Who Fears Death and The Secret Lives of Church Ladies—stories that reflect the nuances of life through the lenses of womanhood, identity, and queerness.

7. Michael B. Jordan – Outlier Society
With powerful performances in Creed, Black Panther, and Sinners, Michael B. Jordan is one of the actors turning his success into infrastructure through his studio, Outlier Society. Interestingly, Jordan announced in 2018 that Outlier Society would be adopting the “Inclusion Rider” clause in all its projects. An Inclusion Rider clause is a clause within an actor’s contract that requires the production company to meet certain diversity targets for its cast and crew, ensuring representation for underrepresented groups. This commitment to diversity and representation demonstrates how Jordan’s studio is revolutionizing Hollywood while ensuring that all groups are represented.
